N.R. Narayana Murthy
Virtually unknown to most of his fellow countrymen just 13 years back, N.R. Narayana Murthy is now a corporate legend in India.
The company that Narayana Murthy co-founded and led for 20 years – Infosys Technologies – is today one of India’s most admired companies.
A software services and consulting provider, Infosys was the first Indian firm to be listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
Murthy and six others including Nandan Nilekani founded Infosys in 1981.
Murthy served as CEO of Infosys until March 2002 when he passed on the baton to his younger colleague Nandan Nilekani.
Under Murthy’s leadership, Infosys was listed on NASDAQ in 1999. He served as the Executive Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor from 2002 to 2006.
Murthy is currently non-executive Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys.
Born on August 20, 1946, Murthy holds a B.E. from the University of Mysore and an M. Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
Narayana Murthy serves as a member of the Indian Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Foundation. He is also an IT advisor to several Asian countries.
Murthy has been conferred honorary doctorates by well-known universities in India and abroad.
